Sony stops sales of six cameras in China that failed inspection
By Rachael Chen
Shanghai. December 16. INTERFAX-CHINA - Sony announced Thursday night it would stop sales of six digital camera models, which failed a quality inspection conducted by the Zhejiang Administration for Industry and Commerce, across China.
The Japanese electronics giant was asked by the Zhejiang provincial government agencies to stop sells of the digital cameras.
"Stopping sales does not mean there will be a recall of the cameras we've already sold," Sony (China) PR official Kang Jian told Interfax. "Further action on this matter will have to wait for pending results of further inspections conducted by the National Camera Quality Supervision and Inspection Center."
Chinese consumers that have bought one of the six digital camera models can contact Sony with questions, Kang said.
Six out of nine Sony digital camera models selected for an inspection by the Zhejiang Administration for Industry and Commerce failed to meet quality standards, the provincial government agency said Monday this week. The inspection was based on recommended industrial standards for digital cameras issued in 2002. The Zhejiang Administration for Industry and Commerce also order a stop to sales of the Sony digital cameras in Zhejiang Province Monday.
A total of 13 digital camera models from different companies failed the inspection carried out by the Zhejiang Administration for Industry and Commerce. Most of the cameras selected for the inspection were from Japanese companies.
A total of nine Sony digital cameras were selected for the inspection, of which six failed to meet quality standards, namely the DSC-H1, DSC-L1, DSC-P200, DSC-W7, DSC-W5 and DSC-S90 models. Two of these models were made by Shanghai Suoguang Electronics Co. Ltd. (SSGE), a joint venture between Sony China, SVA Information and SVA Electron. The others were produced by Sony Electronics (Wuxi) Co. Ltd.
